Paint and Trim codes

Find your matching paint code numbers here. These shades still can be mixed at your local automotive paint shop. First check the year, where it was manufactured and look for the corresponding letters. The codes can be found on the ID tag, which is mounted on the driver side inner guard.

NOTE: The colour code will consist of three letters.  Letters stand for different areas of the car; roof, body and stripes.  For example an ID like ‘AWW’, this simply means the roof was a different colour to the rest of the car: in this example Arctic white, while the rest of car was Kurrajong green.

Problems with car paint shops not understanding paint codes

Many restorers have trouble getting their local paint shop to understand the factory Cortina MK1 paint code.  We suggest you find a car paint shop that has paint mixing systems from PPG.

For example:
Dulon (Acrylic)
Cobra
2K
Autothane

Newer brand systems like Debeer, DuPont etc. do not have the mixing details or recognize the codes from the ID tags to get the correct colour, as they were not around in the early 60’s.  It can be a frustrating process, but ultimately worth the running around to find a supplier that has the correct codes.

We have, at a pinch, successfully colour matched by eye for DeBeer paint, but we weren’t super concerned about a perfect match to original colour as it was for one of our modified 4 door cars.  In that case, we had some leftover paint from an earlier respray, which made it relatively easy to match.

Additionally, laser eye matching process is now so good that if you can take a high quality digital photo of a non-faded part of your car, a good paint shop should be able to match very closely straight off the camera screen.  A good place to take a shot is under the rear parcel shelf or somewhere like that.

Errors have been found on some ID tags were the colour code does not match the colour of the car from factory.  This is not uncommon as sometimes cars were painted with whatever paint the factory was using up at the time.  A friends cars was painted with a Falcon colour at the factory for example.

NOTE: Early hood-lining material was called ‘confetti’ Later cars had material called ‘Loadstar’.  Late headlining material is easy to find locally and ‘Confetti’ is now available through a UK supplier (contact us if you are having difficulties with either of these).
